Esta leyenda se llama “La Cueva de Salamanca” y me la contó mi padre cuando era pequeña, un día que paseábamos por la ciudad para visitar la cueva que está cerca del río. La leyenda proviene del siglo XIII y se cuenta que el diablo daba clases de magia y enseñanzas prohibidas, esoterismo, en la cueva, lejos de las enseñanzas oficiales de la universidad. Siete estudiantes participaban en estas enseñanzas durante siete años y, al finalizar las enseñanzas, uno de ellos tenía que pagar por ellas quedándose en la cueva con el diablo. Uno de estos estudiantes fue El conde de Villena, que fue muy listo. Aunque le tocó pagar consiguió escapar escondiéndose en una tinaja, pero al hacerlo perdió su sombra. Así que se cuenta que si paseas por la ciudad y ves a un hombre sin sombra se trata de la reencarnación del diablo.
This is a legend that my dad told me when I was little, when we were going for a walk to visit the cave that's near the river. The legend comes from the 13th century and it says that the Devil used to teach magic and prohibited teachings to seven students for seven years in the cave, away from the official teachings of the University. At the end of the seven years, one of the seven students was required to pay for the teachings by staying in the cave with the Devil. One of those students was El Conde de Villena, but he was so smart that even though he had to pay, he was able to escape by hiding inside of a big clay jar (tinaja). He managed to escape but on his way out of the cave, he lost his shadow so the legend says that if you ever see a man without his shadow in Salamanca, that's the devil.
